Judged on lyrical proficiency and potency these 10 rappers represent the best of hip hop. Some specialize in powerful puns and others display lyrical depth.

These 10 rappers all bring a unique talent to the hip hop world, commonly defeating opponents in rap battles or selling millions of records. From the humble rap-battling origins to the billboard charts these rappers stand out as being the best of their genre.

  1. Tupac Shakur: Tupac should top every best-rapper-list, as he broke many records and made some of rap's most meaningful songs in his short 25 years. Some of Tupac's songs were originally written as poems and discuss social problems that other rappers shy away from. Case in point: Tupac's record sympathizing with troubled women; "Keep Ya Head Up"
  2. Eminem: Marshall Bruce Mathers, also known as Eminem or Slim Shady, entered the national rap scene in the late 1990s. He is well known for his sharp, witty insults and metaphors. Eminem began his music career in Detroit's underground rap-battle scene and ended up being one of rap's most famous and controversial stars.
  3. Biggie: Born Christopher Wallace, Biggie or Biggie Smalls, is the unofficial king of New York rap. Biggie is known for his feel-good party songs like "Big Poppa", but sometimes dealt with more serious issues like on the song "Suicidal Thoughts".
  4. Nas: Nasir Jones, known in the rap world as Nas, is one of raps most prominent figures. He burst onto the rap scene in the early 90s with Illmatic, and raps about everything from New York living to social injustices and human rights. Nas is more recently known for his Hip Hop is Dead album, where he outlines the problems in hip hop today.
  5. Jay Z: Jay Z helped shape rap into the mainstream powerhouse it is today. His hits in the late 90s such as "Big Pimpin'" showed many pop-music fans that rap isn't all about violence.
  6. 50 Cent: Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent is one of raps most controversial figures. He survived a violent shooting before being signed to Eminem's record label, Shady Records, and rising to the top of the charts with his first major hit single "In The Club".
  7. DMX: While new hip hop fans may not see DMX as a relevant figure in today's hip hop, it is Earl Simmons's gritty street-hop album It's Dark and Hell is Hot that influences the blunt boastful lyrics of many rappers today.
  8. Kanye West: Hated by many for his interruption of Taylor Swift at the MTV awards show, Kanye represents raw emotion and eccentric style in hip hop. He is as successful as a hip hop producer as he is as a rapper, and makes beats for many rappers including Jay Z.
  9. Crooked I: Probably the most under-rated rapper in hip hop, Crooked I brings an unmatched lyrical arsenal to every track. In December of 2010 he signed a record deal with Eminem and will be releasing new music in 2011 with his group Slaughterhouse.
  10. Lil Wayne: Despite his newer releases, which many rap fans seem to be speaking out against, Lil Wayne is deserving of the number 10 spot on any hip hop list. He breaches gaps between musical genres to reach fans that other rapper's can't. Lil Wayne is definitely one of rap's most prolific artists and has many free mixtapes available that are worthy of record-store release.

There are, of coarse, many rappers deserving recognition in specific top 10 lists, but these rappers have broken the ceiling and created musical masterpieces time and time again. Honorable mentions that didn't make the list include rappers Redman, Proof, Ghostface Killa, Royce da 5 9, Fabolous and Big L.

Guest - It was a little tough putting Wayne on the list, I know some of his new stuff lacks diversity. It almost seems like he goes in the booth and rambles out 20 songs in a row without worrying about quality. I do feel like he deserves some recognition for tapping into the markets of other genre's, he's the first rapper I've noticed that was being listened to by "scene kids" and the like. Plus, his mixtapes -- especially the squad up tapes -- have lots of good stuff. I am considering knocking him down to an honorable mention though, have any suggestions about who I should put at number 10? I'm thinking maybe Jada or Lloyd Banks or Redman.

Thanks for inclusion of Wayne. I could see why people might disagree with his selection, but most of them only started to listen after the Carter III. His run from Lights Out to The Carter II is amazing. And his mixtapes contain a lot of classic material. The Prefix, Suffix, Dedication and Sqad Up series can compete against most rapper's material in my opinion.

Sorry but why is it only white people (I am white as hell aswell) who always put Eminem on the top of there "best rapper list"? WHY!? Yeah he is a decent rapper put technical an lyrically he is no where near the best. Besides even considering 50 Cent to be on that list is just a joke. Just because he can make music that sells doesn't mean he is a good rapper.

My list:
Nas
Rakim (why the hell is nobody mentioning him!?)
Biggie
Big L
Red Man
Tupac
KRS-one Jay Z
Mos Def
Method Man

(I'm Black and Hispanic) Eminem is ALWAYS on the top no matter what because he raps about his life, and he is lyrical and deeply poetic with his ryhmes. Also he is versatile. @Guest comment #3

In reference to the last comment... just because these "older" rappers from the eighties and early nineties paved the way for modern rap, that don't make them better. julious erving (dr. jay) was michael jordan's idle as a teenager but that don't make dr. jay better than mike. as far as the top ten rappers of all time... who can say? it's all a matter of opinion. but at the same time, the lists i've read on here (at least a couple of them) seem to be right up my alley.

1)eminem
2)tupac
3)jay-z
4)biggie
5)rakim
*** it's shaky from here because there are so many great rappers to choose from who could be put on this list such as method man, busta rhymes, twista, dmx, ice cube, dr. dre, ludicris, andre 3000, big l, nas, redman, big pun, common, too short, t.i., krs one, tech nine, e-40, scarface, ghostface killah, raekwon, inspectah deck, bone thugs and harmony should be put on here somewhere (even though the can't technically be put on the list), and even royce da 5'9" is developing a loud voice which should definitely be mentioned. With that said, it's out of this list that i choose:
6)nas
7)busta rhymes
8)twista
9)dmx
*** and this one is really tough.
10)ludicris

Lil Wayne is a sell out and is what is wrong with the industry right now, he had a couple good mixtapes, I give him that but what he has turned into is just disgusting really, I was expecting the Carter 4 to be really good, but it was such a let down. He is back to repeatedly rapping about nothing, catchy beats, and not to mention all the artists he had to feature just to sell a record, when will people wake up and realize he admits to just being in it for the money, and cares about nothing of the movement, doesn't contribute anything to the hip hop culture, he was okay back then sure but even then he jacked Jay-Z's style and only had 14 original punchlines which he just re worded, he tried the whole alternative rap thing which it sounded like he just picked up a fucking guitar and started hitting random notes and called it rock rap, more like wack rap if you ask me, this guy is a joke. He only hit big when club hits came out, that girls can shake their ass too. This guy is a joke, we gotta wake up and realize maybe he had a couple good records but then he discovered the wonders of drugs and money, tattoed up his body, spent 20 days in jail at most and thinks he is a gangster. He is a fucking joke.

Anyways my list

1. Eminem (Biased maybe)
2. 2pac
3. Rakim
4. Nas
5. Big L
6. Proof (He was Detroit hip hop)
7. Jay-Z
8. Dr Dre (Best rap producer, and the shit he did with N.W.A was wicked in the 90's)
9. Biggie (I am not a big Biggie fan and maybe that is why he is lower on my list. ;o)
10. Run DMC

Or something like that :D

4. Ice Cube
5. Immortal Technique

based upon lyrical content and genuine talent, flow and the ability to make u rewind and listen to the same bit about 10 times.
method man
mobb deep
big pun
biggie
nas
black thought
mos def
andre 3000
reakwon the chef
the GZA
Most of these artists at their peak were just at a different level. I've barely included any of the megastars because in my opinion the tunes that most of the jay-zs, eminems, kayne wests etc. produce today are so bad they overshadow the tracks that made them what they are today.
